Vicor (VICR) Q3: $197.1M revenue, royalties tripled to $66.6M, $406M backlog
VICR printed $197.1M revenue and $1.33 EPS, above consensus on both. Royalties reached $66.6M, a third of revenue, and lifted gross margin to 68.3%. Backlog is $406M, up 166% in a year.

$VICR printed $197.1M of revenue and $1.33 of diluted EPS for the third quarter, above a consensus that sat between about $184M and $187M of revenue and $1.29 to $1.32 of EPS depending on the source. The QA thesis had two legs, the 48V power modules and an "optional" licensing program. This quarter the licensing leg carried the print: royalties grew from $21.7M to $66.6M in a year. This recap walks the numbers, what the royalty line does to the margin, the peer read across the AI Infrastructure Stack, and the lines to watch next.
The TL;DR. Revenue grew 78.5% from a year ago and 37.5% from Q2. Royalty revenue made up a third of it, which is why gross margin jumped to 68.3% from 58.0% in one quarter. Backlog reached $406M, up 166% in a year. The stock closed the day at $204.14, up about 7% from Monday's $190.68 close.
This recap is drawn from the press release (8-K exhibit 99.1, filed October 20, 2026 before the open). Management's call commentary is not covered here.
The print
$VICR reported the quarter ended September 30, 2026 before the US open on October 20, ahead of an 8:00 a.m. Eastern call. Consensus figures varied across data providers, so the table gives the range reported on the day.
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Consensus | Q2 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $197.1M | ~$184M to $187M | $143.4M | $110.4M |
| Diluted EPS (GAAP) | $1.33 | ~$1.29 to $1.32 | $1.04 | $0.63 |
| Gross margin | 68.3% | n/a | 58.0% | 57.5% |
| Operating cash flow | $69.7M | n/a | $34.0M | $38.5M |
| Backlog | $406M | n/a | $380M | $153M |
The split between the two revenue lines is the story of the quarter:
- Product revenue: $130.5M, from $88.7M a year ago, up 47%. Gross margin on product alone was about 52%, from about 47% a year ago.
- Royalty revenue: $66.6M, from $21.7M a year ago, about three times as much. Royalties carry almost no cost of revenue, so each royalty dollar lands nearly whole in gross margin.
Income from operations reached $72.1M, from $20.9M a year ago. Net income was $63.3M. Cash and equivalents rose to $513.1M at the end of September, from $453.6M at the end of June, with no debt on the balance sheet. Capital expenditure was $16.1M for the quarter, from $4.0M a year ago.
Vicor does not give numeric guidance, so there is no forward range to compare with consensus.
AI Infrastructure Stack read-through
The standing QA thesis on /stocks/vicr rests on one physical fact: AI racks have outgrown the old 12V power bus, and power has to be delivered at 48V straight to the processor. Vicor's current-multiplier modules are one of the few production designs that do this at the currents a modern accelerator draws. The thesis called the licensing program "an optional second leg if litigation lands." This print moves that leg from optional to measurable.
- The first VPD license. The release says Vicor granted its first license on vertical power delivery to an AI OEM at "Stage-2 unit royalty rates."
- The ITC investigation. The US International Trade Commission has instituted an investigation into infringement of Vicor's vertical power delivery patents. Management says this is prompting license inquiries from unlicensed OEMs and hyperscalers.
- Capacity. Vicor bought two more sites within 30 miles of its Andover ChiP fab. The CEO says three fabs would give nearly five times the capacity of Fab-1 alone.
Net read: the demand side of the thesis is confirmed by a $406M backlog, and the licensing side now shows up as a third of revenue. What the print cannot settle is how much of the royalty line repeats every quarter and how much reflects catch-up payments. The quarterly split will answer that over the next few prints.
Peer reaction
$VICR's closest correlated names in the QA universe are $LRCX (0.65 over 252 days), $AMKR (0.63), $TER (0.62), $AEIS (0.62) and $MKSI (0.61). The correlation is a shared exposure to AI hardware spending, not a shared business.
- AEIS is the closest business read: another power-conversion supplier to the same data-center build. A Vicor beat on product revenue says AI rack power content keeps growing.
- LRCX, TER and MKSI read through on the capex cycle. Their link to Vicor is the same customer budget, not the same product.
- The competitors named in the QA bear case are $MPWR, $ADI and $TXN on multi-phase 48V regulators. Vicor's claim is that those designs infringe its vertical power delivery patents. The ITC case is where that claim gets tested.
What worked
- Revenue of $197.1M was above the consensus range, with 37.5% growth from Q2.
- Royalties of $66.6M: the licensing program is now a third of revenue and the main driver of the margin step.
- Gross margin of 68.3%, a ten-point step from Q2.
- Backlog of $406M, up 166% in a year: product demand sits behind the royalty story.
- Operating cash flow of $69.7M and $513.1M of cash with no debt fund the fab expansion from the balance sheet.
What broke
- Royalty visibility. Vicor does not break out how much of the $66.6M is recurring running royalties and how much is one-time or catch-up payments. A margin built on royalties is only as steady as that line.
- Operating expenses. They rose to $62.5M from $42.6M a year ago. Selling, general and administrative costs grew to $38.6M from $22.7M, and they include contingency fees to the law firms enforcing Vicor's patents. Those fees grow with royalty collections.
- Receivables. Accounts receivable reached $122.5M, double the $60.7M of December 2025, and close to two thirds of a quarter's revenue.
- Concentration and competition. The bear case on /stocks/vicr stands: lumpy revenue from a few customers, hyperscalers designing their own power delivery, and well-funded rivals in 48V regulators.
- The tape. Even after the day's gain, the stock is down about 24% over the last month, after a run of about 250% over twelve months. The market is weighing how lasting the new margin base is.
What to watch
- Next earnings. Q4 2026, expected around late January based on Vicor's usual cadence (not yet confirmed).
- The royalty line. A second quarter near $66.6M would say the licensing leg recurs. A sharp drop would say part of Q3 was catch-up.
- The ITC case. Each procedural step in the vertical power delivery investigation is a dated, observable event for the licensing thesis.
- Backlog against revenue. Backlog grew 7% from Q2 while revenue grew 37.5%. If backlog keeps growing slower than shipments, the cover shortens.
- Fab capacity. The timing of the two new sites near Andover, and the capex they require.
