The South Korean government requires would-be investors in leveraged, single-firm ETFs, to take an eight-question exam.
Despite notable stock declines today, memory makers like Micron Technology, Samsung and SK Hynix are far and away the best performers among trillion-dollar technology companies this year. Some of the moves this past week help explain why.
Stock indexes closely tied to AI fell Friday. Japan’s benchmark index slid more than 4%, weighed down by a 13% plunge in SoftBank Group’s shares, after a media report suggested OpenAI could hold off going public until next year. The PHLX semiconductor index dropped about 5%, while the Roundhill Memory ETF fell 6.5%.
Micron's outlook eased chip-demand fears, but inflation concerns quickly reignited volatility across AI-focused stocks.
To see just how skittish the AI trade has become, look no further than South Korea’s Kospi index this week. The benchmark has swung at least 3% in either direction for the last four trading sessions, with even bigger moves intraday.

Memory chipmakers have for decades been trapped in boom-bust cycles, with capacity buildouts hitting the market just as demand craters. Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix are now trying to convince investors this time is different, arguing long-term deals will keep cash flowing even if the datacenter boom bursts. Micron said on Wednesday customers such as Nvidia had committed $22 billion to lock in supplies of memory chips, playing up huge growth in five-year "take-or-pay" deals that require clients to either buy its chips or hand over cash.
Micron Technology edged past the market valuation of Meta Platforms and briefly Tesla's for the first time on Thursday, after the memory chipmaker's solid forecast helped extend its AI-driven ascent. The company's shares were last up 18.4% at $1,236, giving it a market capitalization of $1.398 trillion, compared with Meta's $1.392 trillion. Tesla had a market value stood of $1.4 trillion.

SK Hynix's overtaking of Samsung Electronics to become South Korea's most valuable firm was the culmination of 14 years of bets that brought it skepticism and scorn but ultimately put it at the centre of the global AI gold rush. In 2012, conglomerate SK Group acquired Hynix Semiconductor in a deal that was considered financially irresponsible. Samsung, in contrast, was valued at more than 10 times SK Hynix and was the global leader in Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM), a memory type that powers laptops and smartphones.
South Korea's government is in talks with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix over plans for the next phase of large-scale investments in semiconductor production facilities, an official said on Wednesday, adding an announcement on a new chip cluster would be made soon. "Exponential and explosive" growth in demand for chips driven by the AI industry could require the two companies to speed up ongoing construction of new chip facilities by more than 10 years to 2034-2035, presidential policy adviser Kim Yong-beom told a discussion panel.
