Stocks Sink as Treasury Yields Spike to Highest Level Since 2007

Yesterday Wall Street feared an AI slowdown. Today it found something older to worry about.

Chipotle shares fell 6.4% Tuesday as Brent crude pushed past $109 and the 10-year Treasury yield hit its highest level in nearly 20 years.

Energy stocks were pretty much the only thing working on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 430 points, or 0.8%. The S&P 500 was down 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.8%. Only about 160 stocks in the S&P 500 were rising, and only two of the 11 major sectors were up on the day.

It’s only the tenth trading day of September, but the major stock market indexes are already in quite a hole. The Dow, down 2.4% so far this month, is on pace for its worst 10-day start to September since 2008, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, down 1.4% each, are on pace for their worst start to September since 2020 and 2023, respectively.

The stock market picked a direction: down. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 500 points, or 1%, after oil prices and bond yields spiked. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.6%. The move followed a jump in WTI crude oil futures, which rose 1.

The 10-year yield reached its highest level since 2007, while oil prices climbed above $107 a barrel on a Saudi pipeline closure

Sept 15 (Reuters) - The major U.S. stock indexes were subdued at open on Tuesday as higher crude prices, elevated Treasury yields and an uncertain outlook for AI demand kept investors at bay.

The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.1%. “If you’re ever wondering what the major headlines driving markets are when you wake up, you can pretty much bank on it being interest rates and energy prices,” writes Bespoke Investment Group co-founder Paul Hickey. “This morning, it’s both again, but interest rates are getting the lede.”

Wall Street closed lower on Monday, dragged down by tech and industrial stocks.
