Apple’s dedication to doing as much AI on its devices as possible was on full display during its presentation of the new A20 Pro chip, which power the company’s new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Because of the privacy and security benefits, Apple has been trying to move as much processing to iPhones as possible, keeping customer data out of the cloud. To this end, in 2017 it introduced the Neural Engine: a part of its iPhone chip that could do AI tasks without killing the battery.

Demand for the iPhone 17 has been strong, putting pressure on Apple to deliver again with the next generation of iPhones expected to be unveiled later today. Apple's iPhone 17 series generated more than $170 billion in wholesale revenue in its first year of sales, according to a Wednesday report from Counterpoint Research. According to Shilpi Jain, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, one reason the iPhone 17 performed so well is that pricing was more comparable with competitors that were forced to raise prices due to higher memory costs.
