$COIN printed $1,215.6M of total revenue for the third quarter, flat on the second quarter and 35% lower than a year ago, against a consensus near $1.19B. Subscription and services revenue landed at $570.2M, in the upper half of the company's own $500M to $580M outlook, and reached 49% of net revenue. Adjusted EBITDA rose 60% from Q2 to $332.9M, and the full-year expense guide came down for the second time. This recap walks the numbers, what changed in the guide, the read across the crypto theme, and the lines to watch next.

The TL;DR. Trading stayed quiet: consumer spot volume was $23.4B, against $57.4B a year ago, and transaction revenue held at $590.2M only because prediction markets kept growing (over $200M of annualized revenue). Stablecoin revenue rose 5% from Q2 to $307M on record USDC held in Coinbase products. GAAP net income of $718.7M includes $715.0M of gains on crypto held for investment. In the first after-hours trades the stock was quoted around $156, about 3% below the $160.59 close.

This recap is drawn from the shareholder letter (8-K exhibit 99.1, filed October 29, 2026 after the close) and the Form 10-Q filed the same evening. Management's call commentary is not covered here.

The print

$COIN reported the quarter ended September 30, 2026 after the US close on October 29. The consensus figure comes from the data feed QA tracks; providers differ slightly.

Diluted EPS (GAAP)$2.51-$1.36$1.50+67%

Revenue came in slightly above the ~$1.19B consensus. The EPS comparison is not like for like this quarter: the GAAP figure carries $715.0M of gains on the crypto Coinbase holds for investment, which the adjusted measures exclude.

Where the revenue came from:

  • Consumer transactions: $450M, about flat on Q2, as consumer spot volume fell 9% and derivatives volume 6% from the second quarter. Prediction markets made up the difference.
  • Institutional transactions: $92M, down 8% from Q2, roughly in line with the market.
  • Stablecoins: $307M, up 5% from Q2 (down 6% from $325M a year ago). Average USDC held in Coinbase products reached a record $22B, while total USDC averaged $73B, from $77B in Q2.
  • Other services: blockchain rewards $86M, interest and finance fees $69M (record loan book), other subscriptions $109M.

Against the July outlook

Q3 2026July outlookActual
Subscription and services revenue$500M to $580M$570M
Transaction expensesMid-teens % of net revenue16.8%
Adjusted expenses$980M to $1,080M$975M
Stock-based compensation~$245M$233M

Every line landed at or inside the outlook, and adjusted expenses came in below the low end. Headcount was 4,204 at the end of September, from a peak of 4,988 in the first quarter, after the May cost reductions.

The guide

Q4 2026Outlook
Transaction revenue~$165M quarter to date through October 25
Subscription and services revenue$550M to $630M
Transaction expensesMid-teens % of net revenue
Adjusted expenses$1,007M to $1,157M
Stock-based compensation~$240M

For the full year, the adjusted expense range moved to $4,150M to $4,300M, from $4,200M to $4,450M in July: about $100M lower at the midpoint, the second cut this year. Management flags higher average interest rates and the October crypto prices as tailwinds for services, and warns against extrapolating the October transaction figure. These are company guides, not results.

Crypto read-through

The standing QA thesis on /stocks/coin is that Coinbase earns two different kinds of money: trading fees that follow crypto volatility, and services (USDC, staking, custody, lending, Coinbase One) that hold up when trading is quiet. Our teardown video on that page, published October 22, named one line to watch on this print: services against the guide. It held.

  • Trading: crypto volatility fell to multi-year lows in the quarter, and total market spot volume fell 6% from Q2. Coinbase says it gained market share for a fourth quarter in a row, in both spot and derivatives.
  • The new leg: prediction markets passed $200M of annualized revenue, one of the fastest-growing products in the company's history. They cushioned consumer revenue in a slow quarter.
  • Services: 49% of net revenue, up from 41% a year ago. The USDC economics now lean on balances held inside Coinbase products, a record, while USDC held off the platform shrank.

Net read: the print confirms the services half of the thesis and shows the cost base adjusting to a quiet tape. What it cannot settle is when trading volume comes back; consumer spot volume is still 59% below a year ago.

Peer reaction

$COIN's closest correlated names in the QA universe are $SBET (0.81 over 252 days), $MSTR (0.81), $HOOD (0.78) and $CRCL (0.75). The link is the same crypto cycle, not identical businesses.

  • HOOD reported on October 27: its crypto revenue fell 55% in a year while its prediction markets earned $173M in the quarter. Two retail platforms, the same pattern: crypto trading down, event contracts up. The teardown is on /stocks/hood.
  • CRCL issues USDC. Coinbase's stablecoin line depends on the same balances and the same interest rates, so the two read through on each other every quarter.
  • MSTR and SBET hold crypto on their balance sheets; they read through on prices more than on trading activity.

What worked

  • Services of $570.2M, up 3% from Q2 and 49% of net revenue.
  • Stablecoin revenue up 5% from Q2, on a record $22B of USDC held in Coinbase products.
  • Prediction markets above $200M of annualized revenue.
  • Adjusted expenses of $975M, below the July outlook, and a lower full-year range.
  • Adjusted EBITDA up 60% from Q2, the 15th positive quarter in a row.

What broke

  • Trading volume. Consumer spot volume of $23.4B, down 59% from a year ago; total spot volume of $134.5B, down 54%.
  • Transaction revenue. $590.2M, down 44% from a year ago and below every quarter since Q3 2024.
  • USDC outside the platform. Average off-platform USDC fell to $51B from $57B in Q2, and the revenue on it fell to $126M from $146M.
  • Earnings quality. GAAP net income of $718.7M rests on $715.0M of crypto investment gains; adjusted net income was $77.7M.
  • The tape. The stock closed at $160.59, 15% lower over a month and 54% lower over a year, and traded lower in the first after-hours trades.

What to watch

  • Next earnings. Q4 2026, expected in February on Coinbase's usual cadence (not yet confirmed).
  • Transaction revenue. About $165M in the first 25 days of October, roughly the Q3 daily pace; the company itself cautions against extrapolating it.
  • Services against $550M to $630M. The Q4 range for the line that held this quarter.
  • USDC. Whether balances held inside Coinbase products keep rising while off-platform balances shrink.
  • Prediction markets. Whether the $200M run rate keeps compounding once the sports calendar picks up.
