Kevin Warsh’s ‘Bear Steepener’ Is No Goldilocks Moment for Stocks

Everyone knows that interest rates affect stock prices. The Fed’s decision Wednesday to keep overnight rates unchanged sounds like it would have been clearly bullish, but stocks sold off just after Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference. Also following Warsh’s Q&A, long-term Treasury yields hit a 19-year high.

SK Hynix shares leaped 30% on Friday, by far their biggest daily rise since the South Korean memory-chip manufacturer and AI darling went public in the 1990s. Not far behind was fellow chip producer Samsung Electronics, which rose 27%. News that hedge fund Situational Awareness has offloaded troubled AI-related investments to Citadel is contributing to Friday's blockbuster gains in tech stocks, hedge-fund managers said.

Ford and GM Attempts to Go Beyond Cars Deserve Skepticism

Ford Motor and General Motors are looking beyond cars. In May, Ford’s shares surged as much as 45%, adding nearly $23 billion of market value, in the weeks after it formally announced Ford Energy, a grid-scale battery-storage business that will serve the power needs of artificial-intelligence hyperscalers and utilities. Its shares have since moderated, but are still up more than 20% since the Ford Energy launch.

Amazon jumps as AWS growth soothes fears over rising AI spending

Amazon shares jumped more than 12% before the bell on Friday after the e-commerce and cloud giant posted its strongest cloud growth in over ‌four years, bolstering investor confidence that its multibillion-dollar AI bets are driving a ‌fresh wave of demand. The rally put Amazon on track to add about $300 billion in market value, as investors looked past a 10% increase in planned capital expenditure to $220 billion and instead focused on booming demand at Amazon Web Services (AWS), the profit engine at the center of the company's AI push. The reaction was in sharp contrast to Alphabet's earnings last week, when the Google-parent's shares stumbled after it reported its ‌first negative cash flow, which stemmed from rising AI-related spending.

Apple slides as supply snags cloud outlook, putting iPhone demand in focus

Apple shares dropped 7.3% before the bell on Friday as the tech giant warned that supply ‌constraints would hurt growth, prompting investors to look beyond near-term shortages to ‌gauge the hit from an expected iPhone price hike. The decline puts Apple on track to shed roughly $361.6 billion in market value, if the losses hold. The company's outlook highlighted a broader industry challenge, with AI-driven demand tightening supplies of advanced chips and memory, driving up costs and prolonging supply-chain bottlenecks across the technology sector.
