CHICAGO, Aug 19 () - Merck and Moderna's success with a personalized cancer vaccine designed to keep melanoma at bay opens a new avenue of treatment that doctors hope will work against many types of tumors. Unlike chemotherapy, which kills both healthy and cancerous cells, or immunotherapy, which revs up the immune system, personalized cancer vaccines train the immune system to specifically target mutations found only on a person's tumor.

Promising news from a major drug company, reports of some dovish Fed committee members, and a government bond buyback announcement combined forces to boost markets on Wednesday.

STORY: :: Why Moderna and Merck's cancer vaccine trial may be a milestone

:: New York / August 19, 2026

:: Michele Gershberg, Global Health Editor

"The two drugmakers, Moderna and Merck, gave an overview of a clinical trial that was testing a new cancer vaccine, together with a widely used cancer treatment from Merck called Keytruda. It was testing it in melanoma patients, and, it was a large trial. And they said that what they found is that it works better than just Keytruda by itself, when it comes to preventing the disease from returning, or from spreading to other parts of the body." //

"The trial itself was looking at patients who had just had their tumors removed surgically. //

At the moment, Moderna has told us that they expect that there are thousands of patients who could benefit from this if they receive regulatory approval. And that approval, their aim is to get it sometime in 2027." //

"This is designed to treat melanoma. But there are dozens of studies looking at this and all kinds of cancers. In lung cancer, in pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, a wide array. So this is the first sign, scientifically, that, in a large setting, compared to other kinds of treatment, that this works." //

"The news is extremely significant for Moderna. Our readers may know Moderna as the maker of a very effective COVID-19 vaccine. And they're, you know, their fortunes surged on that vaccine, you know, during and immediately after the pandemic. But since then, use of the vaccine has slowed. // And the idea of a of a cancer vaccine based on its mRNA technology, has attracted a lot of interest.The news today signals that there is more evidence to think that that hope will materialize, and it will become a big marketplace." //

"The results are also a real positive for Merck. You know, they are very well known for Keytruda for cancer patients. They are testing this vaccine approach in a number of different trials. So it opens up a new possibility for Merck, and it's, you know, in its own therapy. And that is significant because the patent on that, on Keytruda is expected to expire within or later in this decade. And, you know, and this is, you know, opening up their market for them."

The companies tested the vaccine together with Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda, a widely used melanoma treatment. Thousands of patients who have undergone surgery to remove high-risk melanoma tumors could benefit as soon as next year if regulators approve the vaccine, Moderna President Stephen Hoge said in an interview.

This is the first positive late-stage trial result for an mRNA cancer vaccine, which trains a patient's immune system to fight tumors by targeting specific mutations in those cells, and the first such study to show that adding a treatment to Keytruda worked better than that therapy alone. Merck, Moderna and other companies are testing similar approaches against lung, breast and pancreatic cancers.
