How Markets Shook Off This Week's Shocks

Markets opened on shaky footing on Monday. Damage to Saudi Arabia’s crucial East-West pipeline stoked worries about oil shortages and inflation, sending oil prices and bond yields higher. Just a few days later, both seem like a distant memory, as oil prices fall premarket and AI stocks jump.

Daily Briefing: Higher Rates Deepen Private Equity’s Zombie-Fund Problem

Higher interest rates threaten to prolong private equity’s record $349 billion backlog of “zombie funds,” making exits harder, squeezing fee income and potentially forcing some firms to shrink. The Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates on Wednesday will deepen problems in their portfolios from a generation of buyouts that are stuck. The bigger the logjam gets, the harder it will be to raise new funds, reducing the fee income private-equity firms rely on, a cycle that can spiral.

Meta’s AI Agent Has a Trust Problem

Last week, Meta rolled out Muse, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s “personal AI agent built for everyone.” In Meta’s telling, it also democratizes AI. Zuckerberg first described his vision for “personal superintelligence” last year and previewed Muse in an August essay where he spoke of “putting power in people’s hands to pursue their own aspirations.”
