<body><p>STORY: Stocks started the week on a down note, with the Dow falling about six tenths of one percent, while the S&P 500 dropped two tenths and the Nasdaq ended basically flat.</p><p>:: Archive</p><p>Investors looked for moves toward de-escalation in the Middle East&nbsp;while they waited for earnings reports due from major technology companies later in the week.</p><p>Melissa Brown, managing director of investment decision research at SimCorp, says the technology firms will have to post significant earnings growth to maintain their lofty trading levels.&nbsp;</p><p>“Every company, whether it's Google or Tesla, obviously they have very different business models and different drivers of their business. But overall, I think to justify the high valuations that we see in a lot of those names, we would need to see good earnings growth, not just kind of your run-of-the-mill 10%, but you'd want to see higher earnings growth on top of good margins as well. So, we want the businesses to be profitable and growing.”</p><p>:: Archive</p><p>Meanwhile, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Monday that they were imposing a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a new front in the U.S.-Iran war and widening the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.&nbsp;</p><p>But a senior Iranian official told Reuters that mediators have passed Iran a proposal to de-escalate the war with the U.S. that would offer a 10-day ceasefire to find ways to revive an interim deal reached last month.</p><p>Stocks on the move included Paramount Skydance which lost two percent and Warner Brothers Discovery which slipped almost four percent after a judge halted their $110 billion merger temporarily as a coalition of states argued it would irreparably harm competition.</p><p>And shares of Domino’s Pizza gained two percent after the chain’s quarterly revenue edged past Wall Street estimates.</p></body>

Stocks related to artificial intelligence have been under pressure for weeks because of worries that their prices have shot too high and that voracious demand for computer memory and processors may not be sustainable if AI ends up not producing as much profit and productivity as promised. Oil prices surged as fighting in the Middle East intensified, while U.S. futures slipped.

<body><p>STORY: Wall Street's main indexes ended lower on Thursday, with the Dow dropping two-tenths of a percent, the S&P 500 shedding about half a percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq losing almost one-and-a-half percent.</p><p>Chip stocks tumbled despite bellwether TSMC posting a 77% jump in quarterly profit, it's shares falling more than 2%.</p><p>Mel Casey, senior portfolio manager at FBB Capital Partners, said the pullback demonstrated the lofty expectations for a sector that has soared by nearly 70% so far this year.&nbsp;</p><p>"You just have so many investors in the same trade here and really banking on every little component of the value chain, like, humming along at maximum pace. And so anything that's a little bit shy of, say, the whisper, or anything that's as good as expected but not better than expected is seen almost as a disappointment. And so that's what you're seeing today. But there's nothing you could really point to in the Taiwan Semi report to feel bearish about."</p><p>Memory-chip makers were among the biggest laggards, with SanDisk, Western Digital, Seagate Technology and Intel down between about five-and-a-half and twelve-and-a-half percent.</p><p>:: Netflix</p><p>Elsewhere in the market, shares of Netflix tumbled more than 7% in extended trading after the streaming giant's third-quarter revenue and earnings projections hovered below Wall Street targets. The company also said it would reduce the amount of information it discloses about consumers' viewing hours as it seeks new avenues of growth.</p><p>Shares of UnitedHealth Group closed higher after the company beat Wall Street earnings estimates and hiked its 2026 forecast.</p><p>But shares of United Airlines fell as surging oil prices weighed on its forward guidance.</p><p>Meanwhile, generally upbeat economic data on Thursday showed solid core retail sales, a drop in jobless claims and surging manufacturing activity in the Northeast.</p></body>
