S&P Global Ratings announced Thursday that it was downgrading the credit ratings of the software and AI cloud computing giant from BBB to BBB-, one notch above speculative grade, or junk-bond, ratings. Oracle’s “growing AI infrastructure business is diluting its strong business risk profile,” S&P analysts wrote. The extra yield, or spread, that investors are demanding to hold Oracle’s 5.7% bonds due in 2036 was recently 1.84 percentage points, according to MarketAxess, up from 1.75 percentage points Wednesday.

Investing.com — Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL) shares managed to gain 2.7% on Thursday, defying a credit rating downgrade from S&P Global Ratings. While shares edged slightly lower from their midday highs, the tech giant still traded firmly in positive territory. Investors chose to focus on Oracle’s staggering $638 billion backlog of cloud contracts rather than the immediately apparent threat to its balance sheet: S&P downgraded Oracle’s long-term issuer credit rating to ’BBB-’ from ’BBB’, retaining a

SpaceX’s $25 billion bond deal in late June has proven to be a dud amid apparent investor concern that the company will rely on the debt markets for its massive projected capital spending over the coming years. In a widely hyped sale, SpaceX sold the $25 billion of debt following its IPO in five bond tranches with maturities ranging from five years to 30 years. There were reports that the deal was more than three times oversubscribed and SpaceX was able to price the bonds at narrower yield premiums above U.S. Treasuries than had been expected.

Oracle (ORCL) stock has had a rough year, down 37% while the market climbed. The reason for the pessimism is plain to see: a colossal spending plan to build out its cloud infrastructure. Investors are worried about the cost, the execution risk, and the impact on near-term margins. But the stock's low price appears to give little credit for the one number that reframes that entire risk: the company's Remaining Performance Obligations, or RPO.
