A decade ago, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) was respected but boring. It made chips for Apple, Qualcomm, and a long list of fabless designers, and the market valued it like a cyclical industrial. Then the node race got serious. TSMC pulled away from Samsung and Intel at 7nm, then 5nm, then 3nm, and the ... Taiwan Semiconductor Delivers 2,095% Gain Over 10 Years. Will It Continue To Outperform?

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang makes his second visit to South Korea in just seven months this week, it won't be only to meet top memory chip and robotics executives, but to throw the first pitch at a baseball game and appear on a TV talk show. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix between them make about 70% of the memory needed for AI chips like Nvidia's. And the country's strength in manufacturing and robotics sets it up to be a key player in physical AI, where AI is embedded in robots, cars and factories. "Nvidia's dependence on South Korean suppliers is rising," Jeff Kim, an analyst at Seoul-based KB Securities, wrote in a research note.
SK Hynix told investors this week it received "tremendously positive" feedback on its proposed U.S. listing as the chipmaker benefits from strong demand for advanced memory semiconductors needed to run AI data centers, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday. SK Hynix told some investors this week that it had "tremendously positive" feedback from stockholders to its U.S. listing plan given AI demand and the company's competitive position in the memory-chip market, the person said. The company, a major supplier to Nvidia, expects a U.S. listing to broaden its investor base, as some U.S.-based institutional investors invest in U.S.-listed stocks only due to internal mandates, the person said.

Earnings are the principal driver behind the breathtaking rallies achieved by Korean and Taiwanese benchmark indices in 2026, and Goldman Sachs thinks the market is still underestimating the longevity of the chip cycle.
In previous decades, South Korea has always been a cultural and financial afterthought after Japan, with its dominance in electronics and engineering through companies like Sony, Toyota, JVC, Honda, and Mitsubishi; and China, with its enormous low cost manufacturing, geopolitical and military clout, and expanding middle class prosperity. SK Hynix plans to double memory capacity over five years as AI chip shortages continue pressuring global supply.
The world's most valuable technology companies with the exception of Alphabet added billions of dollars in market value in May, as upbeat earnings outlooks and strong demand for AI chips fuelled a rally in their shares. Apple, memory chipmakers Micron Technology, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix led the gains, adding $598 billion, $512 billion, $481 billion and $377 billion, respectively, in market value. Their valuations rose to $4.58 trillion, $1.09 trillion, $1.10 trillion and $1.34 trillion, respectively.
The semiconductor industry has a funny way of changing the rules just when companies think they’ve figured them out. A few years ago, the hottest chip businesses were processors and foundries.
