SK Hynix has raised $26.51 billion by issuing American depositary receipts in what would become the largest share sale by a non-U.S. company on Wall Street.
U.S. chip shares trade sharply lower premarket, extending the reach of a global wobble in artificial intelligence-related stocks following Samsung's quarterly update. Micron Technology and Intel fell around 6% and 4%, respectively Applied Materials and Lam Research, both major suppliers to Samsung--each lost around 5%.
The world’s second-largest memory chip maker said in a regulatory filing with the Korea Exchange on Monday that it is seeking to raise 43.141 trillion won, equivalent to $28.21 billion, by issuing American depositary receipts on the Nasdaq. Despite the downward revision, the deal would still rank among the biggest share sales in history, second only to SpaceX’s record initial public offering raising $75 billion last month. SK Hynix said it would use the offering’s proceeds to expand chip-making facilities in South Korea and purchase chip-making equipment such as ASML’s extreme ultraviolet scanners.
Shares of European semiconductor companies were following their Asian peers in green territory, a day after investors shunned stocks linked to artificial intelligence.
Chinese export controls, dependence on the U.S. for technology and the structural weakness of Europe's domestic chip industry mean it faces a "bleak future," an EU-funded report found on Thursday. The independent report by the European Union's Institute for Security Studies and French think-tank Institut Montaigne concluded that Chinese export controls on critical minerals and magnets or the risk of a war in the Taiwan Strait were major threats to supply. Further vulnerability stems from the EU's dependence on the U.S. for technology, including design software and the possibility the U.S. could block exports to China by chip-making equipment supplier ASML, Europe's most valuable company.

South Korean semiconductor shares rallied on Thursday after U.S. memory chipmaker Micron Technology's quarterly results and forecast beat expectations, boosting optimism over sustained demand for AI-related chips. Shares of SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics rose as much as 11.6% and 6.2%, respectively, in early trade, tracking a rally in U.S. chip stocks after Micron's earnings and outlook reinforced confidence in the memory sector. The rally also followed SK Hynix's announcement on Wednesday of plans to raise up to 45.45 trillion won ($29.52 billion) through a secondary listing on Nasdaq, as it seeks to capitalise on strong investor appetite for AI stocks.
Shares of chipmakers surged late on Wednesday, adding over $400 billion in market value after strong forecasts from Micron Technology and Qualcomm breathed fresh life into Wall Street's recently waning AI stock rally. Micron surged 12% in extended trade after forecasting quarterly earnings above analysts' estimates, signaling that heavy investments in AI-related infrastructure will drive strong demand for its memory chips. Also after the bell, Qualcomm said it expects $15 billion in sales from its data center business by 2029 as it moves beyond its core smartphone chip business and shifts its focus to AI.
