The three major indexes closed in the red on Monday after President Donald Trump threatened to bomb Oman if it blocked U.S. efforts to strike a peace deal with Iran. “With both sides still far apart, investors grew pessimistic that the Strait of Hormuz would properly reopen any time soon… That put pressure on fixed income, particularly longer-dated sovereign bonds,” Deutsche Bank macro strategist Henry Allen said.

Global shares were mostly lower on Tuesday, as rising oil prices and worries about inflation countered the boost to sentiment from robust corporate earnings reports. In Asia, Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 sank 2.5% to finish at 67,460.73. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained nearly 0.1% to 25,471.15, while the Shanghai Composite added 0.2% to 3,990.30.

Another quiet day on Wall Street led to a rally in chips and energy stocks, but the rest of market languished in the August sun. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 272 points, or 0.5%, on Monday. The S&P 500 dropped 0.5%.

And what these companies are doing really to help the lower leg of the K-shaped economy, as well as trying to capture market share of people who are trying to stretch the dollar a little bit further coming from the middle class."</p><p>Among individual stock moves, Microsoft and Meta Platforms provided the biggest drags on the S&P 500, with both declining more than 3%.</p><p>Chip stocks provided a boost with Micron Technology adding 4% and Applied Materials climbing 5.5%.</p><p>Meanwhile, oil futures settled up more than $2 per barrel as investor pessimism about diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran war fanned global supply worries.
