Apple changes fees for alternative app stores in EU

Apple said on Tuesday it will charge a 5% commission on digital transactions in ‌apps distributed outside its App Store, replacing a more complex system ‌as it seeks to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. The company last year changed App Store rules and fees in the EU after the bloc's antitrust regulators ordered it to remove commercial barriers that they said hindered developers from directing customers outside the store. The regulators criticised Apple's conditions, including ‌a new Core Technology Fee, saying they discouraged developers from using alternative app distribution channels on its iOS mobile operating system.

Apple has ‌four months to implement the changes after the decision is served.

Street Calls of the Week

Monday - Apple What’s the full story? Jefferies downgrades Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) to Underperform with a $263.66 price target (16% downside) after supply-chain checks reveal the cancellation of the September 2027 all-glass "20th anniversary" iPhone due to poor production yield. This eliminates a projected $2,060 average selling price (ASP) flagship meant to anchor higher margins across future Pro models, flattening iPhone’s projected FY26–FY31 ASP growth from 9.0% to 6.8%. Maryland tax court voids digital ad tax, orders refunds to Apple, Google and Peacock TV

A Maryland state tax court has struck down the state’s first-in-the-nation tax on digital advertising and ordered state officials to repay the tax money already collected from big tech firms. The Maryland Tax Court said the tax violates the federal Internet Tax Freedom Act as well as the First Amendment and the commerce and due process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. Maryland estimated the tax, approved in 2021, could raise about $250 million a year to help pay for a sweeping K-12 education measure.
