Meta has abandoned a global pledge by leading companies to source all of their electricity from renewable sources, the social media giant confirmed Friday.A Meta spokesperson told AFP the company is continuing to scale up investments in renewable energy, and that leaving RE100 does not change its goal of matching its electricity use with 100 percent clean energy.

A Barron’s analysis found that the stock performed worse than 90% of other U.S. IPOs with market capitalizations of $1 billion or more since July, 2009. Over the first 27 trading days, SpaceX was down 23% from its first day closing price of $161.

Investors aren’t buying the earnings story this summer, in contrast to the spring rally that powered stocks to a record high in early June, suggesting a tough climb for markets over the back half of the year. Early second-quarter earnings data suggests companies are beating Wall Street forecasts by nearly 9%, well ahead of the four-quarter average of around 7.5% and the 4.4% tallied since 1994, according to LSEG. Nearly 85% of companies are beating estimates, compared with the recent average of around 80% and the historic reading of around 68%, and LSEG figures suggest overall second-quarter profit growth of 27%.

Nvidia, Microsoft and other tech heavyweights made a public case to lawmakers on Friday in favor of open-source ‌AI models, wading into a debate roiling the business and policy worlds over ‌who controls the powerful technology. In a letter posted on X and also signed by two dozen companies and groups ​including Meta Platforms and IBM, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that lawmakers should avoid "premature restrictions on open models that stifle competition or drive innovation overseas." The letter adds to the growing debate about open-source models that are harder to regulate, such as Nvidia's own and those released ‌in recent weeks by Chinese ⁠labs, and the closed-source models controlled by specific companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
