The standard $UUUU story is a uranium miner: the leading US producer, a proxy on the uranium price with a US flag on it. That story is half-right. Energy Fuels does produce uranium, and the uranium side works: second-quarter revenue of $25.1M against $4.2M a year earlier, at a gross margin near 57%. But the equity case the company itself is now selling is a different business built on top of it, a Western rare earth magnet chain that has booked no meaningful sales yet.
The more accurate frame: a profitable-at-the-mine uranium producer spending its balance sheet to become something else. About $996M of working capital at 2026-06-30, almost all of it in marketable securities, stands against a plan to pay about $718M in cash plus 65.85M new shares for Vacuumschmelze, a German magnet maker. This piece walks through what Energy Fuels does, how it makes money today, where it sits in the nuclear theme, and the gap between the uranium business the market can see and the magnet business it is paying for. Figures are as of 2026-10-30 unless noted.
Why it matters now
UUUU closed at $7.71 on 2026-10-30, about 72% under its $27.72 closing high of January 2026 and within a few percent of its 52-week low of $7.31. Over one month the stock is down 28.2%, over three months 40.1%, over a year 64.7%. The teardown video below was recorded with the stock at $9.96 on 2026-10-09; it has fallen another 23% since, with no change to the uranium guide or the deal terms. The third-quarter print is due on 2026-11-02, after the US close.
The TL;DR. Energy Fuels owns White Mesa in Utah, the only working conventional uranium mill in the United States, and runs a rare earth separation line out of the same plant. Uranium pays today: 310,000 lb sold in Q2 at an average $80.48/lb, revenue $25.1M, a 2026 sales guide of 1.5M to 2.0M lb. The single frame that matters: the uranium business is real and small, and the price now rests on a magnet plan that costs about $718M of cash and a quarter of the share count before it earns a dollar.
What does Energy Fuels do?
Energy Fuels is a US company built around one asset and one idea. The asset is the White Mesa Mill near Blanding, Utah, the only conventional uranium mill in the country still operating. Conventional here means ore is mined and trucked to the mill, as opposed to in-situ recovery, where the uranium is dissolved underground and pumped up (the method Uranium Energy uses in Texas and Wyoming). White Mesa takes ore from the company's mines and projects in Utah, Arizona and Wyoming and turns it into yellowcake, the uranium concentrate sold to utilities.
The idea is that the same mill can separate rare earth elements. Monazite, a mineral sand that carries both uranium and rare earths, can be processed at White Mesa under the mill's existing licences. The mill already produces neodymium-praseodymium oxide (NdPr), the main magnet metal, and has made dysprosium and terbium at pilot scale. In July 2026 construction began on a heavy rare earth expansion: up to 120 tonnes a year of dysprosium and 20 tonnes of terbium, per the company.
To feed that line, Energy Fuels has been buying the upstream and the downstream. Upstream are mineral sands projects: Donald in Australia (a 12.7% joint venture interest, fully permitted, no final investment decision), Vara Mada in Madagascar and Bahia in Brazil, both in permitting or exploration. Downstream, it closed the purchase of Australian Strategic Materials on 2026-08-28 for about $243.4M, mostly in shares, and agreed on 2026-06-23 to acquire Vacuumschmelze, the German magnet maker, to run from mine to finished magnet. Energy Fuels trades on the NYSE American as UUUU.
How Energy Fuels makes money
Today, from uranium, and from uranium alone. The rare earth segment booked no sales in the second quarter of 2026.
Uranium sales. The company sells yellowcake two ways: under multi-year contracts with US nuclear utilities, signed from 2022 to 2025 at fixed prices above spot at the time, and on the spot market. In Q2 2026 it sold 310,000 lb at an average $80.48/lb, with spot sales near $85/lb and contract deliveries near $76/lb. Costs applicable to revenue were $10.7M, which puts the gross margin near 57%. The company guides 1.5M to 2.0M lb of uranium sales for 2026, and says its contracts add at least $166M of revenue over the next five years. Those are a guide and contract minimums, not results.
The bottom line is still red. Net loss in Q2 was $33.6M, including $10.7M of transaction and integration costs from the acquisitions. The uranium margin does not cover a company that is building a second business.
What funds it. Cash of $58.4M plus $903.2M of marketable securities at 2026-06-30, about $996M of working capital, against $700M of 0.75% convertible senior notes due 2031 (convertible at about $20.34 a share). That treasury is what the Vacuumschmelze deal spends: about $718M in cash plus 65.85M new shares, for an implied equity value near $1.9B, closing expected as early as Q1 2027 subject to regulatory and exchange approvals.
A piece of arithmetic from the teardown frames the uranium side. If Energy Fuels sells 1.5M to 2.0M lb this year at roughly $80/lb, uranium revenue lands near $120M to $160M. At the 2026-10-30 close the company is worth about $2.04B (264.8M shares, our arithmetic). That is 13 to 17 times this year's guided uranium sales, for a company that lost $33.6M last quarter. The multiple is paid for the mill's scarcity and for the magnet plan, not for the pounds.
Where it sits in the nuclear theme
Energy Fuels is a primary member of QA's Nuclear / SMR bubble (weight 0.85) and maps onto two themes: Nuclear for the uranium side and Critical Materials for the rare earths. It is the one name in the uranium pack that also carries a rare earth bet.
Place it by position in the fuel chain. Miners and developers like Energy Fuels, Cameco ($CCJ), Uranium Energy ($UEC), Denison ($DNN) and NexGen ($NXE) produce or will produce uranium. Enrichers like Centrus ($LEU) turn it into reactor fuel. Reactor developers like Oklo ($OKLO), NuScale ($SMR) and Nano Nuclear ($NNE) build the machines that will burn it. Energy Fuels sits at the start of the chain, with one foot outside it.
The correlation table says the market still files it as uranium. UUUU's closest peers in the QA universe, per the teardown, are Denison (0.82), Uranium Energy (0.81) and NexGen (0.81). The fourth is the tell: MP Materials ($MP), the US rare earth miner, at 0.77. No other uranium name carries a rare earth company that high on its list. The stock moves with the uranium pack first, and the magnet story is starting to show in the tape.

Two numbers carry the read. The 57% margin says the uranium business earns at today's prices. The $718M says most of the treasury is already spoken for. Between them sits a share count about to grow by roughly a quarter (65.85M new shares on about 264.8M), on top of the 14.8M issued for Australian Strategic Materials and $700M of notes convertible near $20.34.
The bull case
- White Mesa is scarce twice over. The only working conventional uranium mill in the United States, and a running Western rare earth separation line, under one licence, already built.
- The uranium side is scaling. Revenue up from $4.2M to $25.1M in a year, margins near 57%, a 2026 guide of 1.5M to 2.0M lb and at least $166M of contracted sales over five years.
- Cheap money. The $700M of notes cost 0.75% a year, and the company entered the magnet plan with about $996M of working capital.
- Mine to magnet. Australian Strategic Materials plus Vacuumschmelze would give a non-Chinese chain from feedstock to finished magnet, a stated policy priority in the US and Europe.
- Policy demand for US pounds. Energy Fuels was among the initial domestic suppliers selected for the US Department of Energy's uranium reserve in 2023, and sells to US utilities under long-term contracts.
The bear case
- The deal spends the balance sheet before the new business earns. For $UUUU holders, about $718M of cash and 65.85M shares go out for Vacuumschmelze; the rare earth segment had no sales in Q2.
- Three dilution sources stack. The Vacuumschmelze shares, the 14.8M shares issued for Australian Strategic Materials, and $700M of notes convertible near $20.34.
- Integration risk across two countries. Two acquisitions in Australia and Germany, plus three mineral sands projects (Donald, Vara Mada, Bahia) still in permitting, development or exploration.
- Still a price-taker on uranium. Spot sales move with the uranium price, and the stock trades with Denison, Uranium Energy and NexGen regardless of what the mill does.
- Rare earth economics are policy-dependent. NdPr, dysprosium and terbium prices and the Western support behind them can change, and every magnet dollar in the story is still a plan.
How to access
Energy Fuels trades on the NYSE American as UUUU and in Toronto as EFR. To trade it from a US-retail account alongside the rest of the uranium and nuclear names, see /stack/ibkr.
QA's data has no ETF holdings on file for UUUU as of 2026-10-30, so this piece carries no fund weights; check a uranium fund's own holdings file before relying on a number.

What to watch
- Q3 2026 results on 2026-11-02, after the US close. The read: pounds sold and the realized price against the 1.5M to 2.0M lb guide, costs applicable to revenue against the 57% margin, and whether the rare earth segment books a first sale.
- The Vacuumschmelze closing. Regulatory and exchange approvals, then the actual cash and share count on closing day, expected as early as Q1 2027.
- The heavy rare earth line. First dysprosium and terbium volumes from the expansion that started construction in July 2026.
- The uranium book. New long-term contracts and the price they carry, since contract deliveries ran near $76/lb against spot near $85/lb in Q2.
- Observable reference levels. The 52-week range runs from $7.31 to $27.90; QA's auto-computed retracements of that leg sit at $11.72 (0.786) and $15.18 (0.618), both well above the 2026-10-30 close of $7.71. These are observable reference levels, not trade levels or targets.
- Bubble-level shift. If UUUU starts tracking MP Materials more tightly than Denison and Uranium Energy, the market has begun pricing the magnet company rather than the uranium miner.
