Lightbridge (LTBR) Q3: $236.7M of cash, loss doubles, pilot factory path at INL

LTBR ended Q3 with $236.7M of cash and no revenue. The net loss doubled to $8.3M as R&D rose, and DOE's Launch Pad program opened a path to a pilot fuel factory at INL.

$LTBR reported a net loss of $8.3M, or $0.23 a share, for the third quarter, against $4.1M, or $0.16, a year ago, as research and development spending more than doubled. Cash and cash equivalents rose to $236.7M, and the quarter's news was about the timeline more than the numbers: a selection for the DOE Nuclear Energy Launch Pad at Idaho National Laboratory and a loop irradiation agreement for clad fuel rods. This recap walks the numbers, what the INL steps change for the thesis on /stocks/ltbr, the read across the Nuclear / SMR bubble, and the lines to watch.

The TL;DR. A pre-revenue fuel developer spending more to move faster. Quarterly operating costs rose to $10.3M (from $5.2M), interest income was $2.0M, and $4.5M of stock was sold through the at-the-market program. At the $4.65 close of November 2, the stock is valued below its cash.

This recap is drawn from the news release (8-K exhibit 99.1, filed November 2, 2026 before the open). The conference call of the same day is not covered here.

The print

Lightbridge has no revenue: the quarter is read through its costs, its cash and its milestones.

Over nine months, the net loss was $20.4M ($0.62 a share) against $12.4M, and operating cash used was $13.2M against $8.1M.

  • Cash: $236.7M at September 30, up from $201.9M at December 31, 2025, held mostly in Treasury instruments of 30 to 90 days. Working capital $234.2M.
  • Funding: about 4.3M shares sold through the at-the-market program in nine months for $48.9M net, of which 579,685 shares for $4.5M in the third quarter. About $91.4M remains available under the $150M program.
  • Why costs rose: new hires, bonuses and stock awards, computing costs for the company's high-performance computer, and more work orders at INL.

The milestones

  • DOE Nuclear Energy Launch Pad (August): selection gives a path toward DOE authorization to design, build and operate a Lightbridge Fuel Pilot Factory (called SHED) at INL, to make lead test assemblies for US commercial reactors. The company is still negotiating the agreements and the scope; construction and operation need further DOE and INL authorizations.
  • Loop irradiation in the Advanced Test Reactor (August): a new task statement covers clad uranium-zirconium rodlets, cylindrical and multi-lobe, irradiated under conditions close to a commercial pressurized water reactor. Management says this could let it go from the test reactor straight to lead test assemblies in commercial plants.
  • First samples: the coupons discharged from the test reactor in May are in post-irradiation examination at INL.
  • Japan: a notice of allowance for the multi-zone fuel element patent.

Nuclear / SMR read-through

The standing QA thesis on /stocks/ltbr is "the cash is the floor, the timeline is the risk". This print strengthens the floor and gives the timeline a possible shortcut, without dating it.

  • Floor: cash rose by $34.8M in nine months, funded by share sales, while the nine-month operating cash burn was $13.2M.
  • Timeline: the Launch Pad route and the loop tests could compress the path to lead test assemblies. None of the agreements for the Pilot Factory is signed yet.
  • Cost: a faster path costs more. Quarterly R&D is now about 2.6 times last year's level, and a pilot factory would add capital spending.

For the cohort, Lightbridge is a fuel story for the existing reactor fleet (more power from the same plants) rather than a reactor builder, so it reads on utility demand for uprates and longer fuel cycles.

Peer reaction

Lightbridge trades with the Nuclear / SMR bubble, next to reactor developers such as $OKLO, $SMR and $NNE, and the fuel chain of $LEU and $CCJ. On a print with no revenue, the stock usually moves with that group more than with its own numbers. $BWXT reported the same evening (recap).

What worked

  • Cash of $236.7M, more than the stock's market value at the November 2 close.
  • A DOE-backed route toward a pilot fuel factory at INL.
  • Loop irradiation of clad rods under reactor-like conditions, a step closer to commercial geometry.
  • First post-irradiation examination underway on schedule.
  • Interest income of $2.0M covering about a fifth of quarterly operating costs.

What broke

  • No revenue, and none expected before lead test assemblies and regulatory approval.
  • Losses. The quarterly net loss doubled to $8.3M.
  • Dilution. Share sales remain the funding model, with $91.4M left on the program.
  • Open agreements. The Pilot Factory still needs agreements, reviews and authorizations from DOE and INL.
  • The tape. A $4.65 close, down about 83% over a year and 27% over a month.

What to watch

  • Next earnings. Q4 and full year 2026, expected in early 2027 on the company's usual cadence (not yet confirmed).
  • Launch Pad agreements. The signed scope, cost and schedule of the Pilot Factory at INL.
  • Test data. Results from the post-irradiation examination of the first samples.
  • Loop irradiation. When the clad rodlets enter the test reactor.
  • Share sales. The pace of at-the-market sales against the cash burn.
